The republican party should take not with this recent change of party of Senator Specter. Senator Specter is well known for being a Maverick, he isn't the usual on many issues within his party, nor will he in his new party. This is a Senator who is pro choice and pro labor, yet pro capital punishment and heavily against any supression of gun rights.
Senator Specter has decided to leave the GOP because it is getting to far right. The room for moderats in the party is shrinking and he certainly was moderate. After his stimulas vote I saw numerous attack on Senator Specter, yet after doing any research on the man you could plainly see he voted on what he believed not what his party said. I defended Senator Specter on many occasions yet the anger directed at him frankly shocked me. Apparently he saw the same thing I did, a party that is moving less and less away from any moderates.
I appauled Senator Specter for leaving for a bigger tent party like the democratic party, for while the Democratic party is Center-Left, we openly embrace those "center" people. Infact most democrats I know are center on one or many issues.
That is the beauty of the Democratic party, we have a place for almost anyone, and you don't have to agree with the party 100% of the time. I hope Senator Specter will enjoy being apart of that kind of party.

Letter to Governor Henry
Governor Henry,
I come to you today as a young, concerned citizen of the great state of Oklahoma. The choices you and our legislator make today will effect my future in many years to come, and is why I choose to write you today.
I don't see myself as radical on social issues, particularly on abortion itself I am moderate not wanting it to become a form of birth control, but seeing the use of abortion in cases of mother's life in dangerment, incest, and rape cases as valid. However House Bill 1326 oversteps the issue of abortion, it instead cripples our scientific community and drives out progression from our state. The nation itself has done well to reverse old standards that limited any federal funding to this potential groundbreaking research, and I myself personally have been effected by the issue.
I had a very dear cousin, her name was Michelle she was very young and ended up having cancer, and I will never forget how hard the process was for her, and my aunt, I go over the heartbreaking emotions from time to time, and the heartbreaking nature that my entire family went though. Instead of having ease and being able to be near and close to her family she had to go all the way down to Dallas Texas for Stem Cell treatment because the State of Oklahoma had no such research. She ended up dying, and my family lost valuable time with her, and thousands if not millions are going through similar cases today. We cannot allow the new republican majority to get away with this radical legislation. The possibilities of this research are nearly limitless, and what it could bring to the state is amazing. It offers possible treatments for Alzheimer, parkasins and spinal cord injury upon many other ailments. Literally thousands if not millions could be eased of pain through this research, this is the moral issue I see. We have an opportunity to ease if not eliminate pain of not only patients but their respected families.
Conservative critics will label it as a protection of life, yet they overlook the protection of the lives of all those who could be affect by this legislation. Adult stem cells have been researched and funded grossly over embryonic stem cells, and much is still not known about embryonic stem cells themselves, instead we only know that their is a good possibility that it will present cures to many different ailments. Therefore the argument that only adult stems cells should be used are far off base, and undercut how severely under funded embryonic stem cell research has been. The arguments over how it's been unaffected is unvailed at the least, and we are affecting people's lives right now, right here in this state.
I call to you Governor, as a concerned citizen and as someone who has seen the tradegy of our primitive view on stem cell research for far too long. The moral concern here is our future, it is our progress, and our citizens and it matters what we do now. I plead with you to accept the many calls to not sit idly by and veto this legislation and I hope you will see the effect on history you now hold.
hopefully,
Erik G. Roscom

HB 1326
Currently there is a bill headed for the State Senate, House bill 1326, A measure that will attempt to send us back to the days of President bush in the Respect to stem cell research. I understand fully the argument of using embryonic stem cells for research, I have extensively looked up the possibilities and the arguments against it, however I see the possibilities and the situation as to dire to pass off. I myself am no where near radical on the issue of Abortion and think there needs to be reasonable restrictions on the institution to prevent it spiraling into a form of birth control, but I also can see the immense amount of good that can be done as a result of Embryonic stem cell research.
At the University Of Oklahoma, scientist have been crippled in their desire to experiment with embryonic stem cells, as many have. The University of Michigan has already launched their program, while other states such as Florida, Virginia, and Georgia have limited any hopes of furthing the vital research. The University of Oklahoma is one of the top schools in the nation for research on the subject, and as a consequence could help heal the suffering of Thousands of Oklahomans. There are lives that can be drastically changed by this research, some of our worst afflictions have possible cures through this research. Alzheimer's, and Spinal cord injuries. An embryonic cell has so much more potential than the arguments you will hear from adult stem cells. For many years now, scientist have been without means to look into embryonic cells, but the possibilities are almost endless.
These are people's lives, people who already are walking, and breathing on this planet. These are people who suffer every day because of a horrible dieses that they did nothing to deserve. You yourself might know someone afflicted with one of these ailments, it might be a friend, or a loved one. The argument is using life for research, however the exclusion of this research could effectively bring thousands closer to death. While it is an uncomfortable system, it is a necessary system to furthering ourselves.
If This bill is passed through the Senate it can set back years of possible cures. It can prevent thousands from an easement of pain, or cures for a horrible desise. This issue goes beyond the usual argument of "Pro-life" or "Pro-choice", this cripples scientific advancement. I do not consider myself radical on abortion, but I realize that this research can save lives, and ease the suffering of countless men and women. I not only ask, I urge people to realize how dire this research can be for further advancement within medicine and science. I ask you to ask you to think of the people who might die without this research. It's not that I support cloning, I don't, It's not that I am a strong voice for Abortion, I am not, I don't support anything in the realm of science-fiction science, but I do support helping people through available medical procedures, and we won't be able to do that if this bill passes.
